TRAFFIC WARDEN BANNED FROM RIDING BIKE ... BECAUSE HE ISN'T TRAINED

Health and safety red tape has caused Cullompton's traffic warden to
get off his bike. Terry Wyatt can no longer use the bicycle provided
for him by the Community Safety partnership after he was told on
Wednesday about police concerns.
Now he has been forced to pound the streets of the Culm Valley on
foot, despite carrying out his duties on a bike for almost two years.
Terry is now required to pass police tests proving he is safe on the
bicycle before he can resume duties using pedal power.
He said: "You may laugh about it, but it's true!
"I've used the bike in the past but now someone's picked up on a
health and safety concern."
Sgt Dan Evans said: "The reason Terry's not on the bike at the moment
is that he has to be properly trained to use it."
Town councillors voiced concern at the last council meeting on
September 2 that they had not recently seen Terry using the bike.
Two bicycles were provided for Cullompton's traffic warden through the
Community Safety Partnership during the Summer of 2002, when Cllr Mike
Thompson was a member.
At the council meeting Cllr Thompson questioned why the bikes were not
being used.
When he was told why Mr Wyatt was not on his bike, he said police
health and safety concerns were a 'joke'.
He said: "I think it's absolutely farcical. Most people can ride a
bike sensibly but to feel the need to train a mature man is farcical."
Terry said: "It's a long way from one end of the town to the other, so
I used the bike quite a lot.
"I would see people about to commit an offence and could cycle up to
them and tell them what they were doing wrong before they left.
"I gave out fewer tickets as a result but people were happier so it's
a bit of a bummer to be grounded."
