Oh sure, now they honor him!

Here is some good news, Curt Harnett was named Assistant Mission Chief for the Pan-ams in 2011 along with Jacques Cardyn as Chief.

Glad to hear. I like both these guys. I know Jacques from Montreal. He used to fence with a few of my friends at UdM (Jacques do you still see Randy or Wesley?).

Nice to see the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) posting this news on their web site.

Keep in mind this is the same silly group, the CCA led by Bill Kinash, who tossed Curt Harnett off their board and committee because he didn’t fill out some paperwork on time.

What a bunch of fools. At the time (2004 or 2005) I told them they should have hired somebody to do Curt’s paperwork just to keep him involved in the association. The CCA has no respect for its athletes past or present.

What an insult to all athletes to have these bureaucrats dismiss years of effort and results because a guy like Curt didn’t shuffle paper they way they wanted.

The CCA and its board are a bunch of fools, bureaucrats who insult everybody in the sport when they continually put people in charge who know nothing about the sport, like current CEO Greg Mathieu a guy from wrestling whose decades long tenure there, especially in marketing was mediocre at best. so far it is even worse at the CCA. Not a new sponsor or event in site, is there????? Same old tired logos on the web site. About all it seems Mathieu can do is paste press release after press release on the web site to make it look like something is happening. It is wasn’t for Para-athlete news, I don’t know what they’d post….

At least the Canadian Olympic Committee appreciates our riders.

07.06.10 - Curt Harnett Appointed as Assistant Chef de Mission for Canada at the 2011 Pan American Games
TORONTO, July 6, 2010 – Three-time Olympic medallist and two-time Pan American Games medallist Curt Harnett was today named Assistant Chef de Mission for Canada at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Harnett, Canada's most decorated cyclist, will join Canada's Chef de Mission and fencing great Jacques Cardyn in supporting the country's athletes and coaches as they strive for the podium in this unique and important international event in October 2011.

“I am excited and honoured to be working alongside Jacques (Cardyn) to provide input and support to the next generation of Canadian athletes,” said Harnett. “With several London 2012 qualifying opportunities in Guadalajara and Toronto playing host in 2015, it is clear to see that the Pan American Movement is on a dramatic upswing and it is a great time to be part of this evolution.”

Harnett is a four-time Olympian and the only Canadian cyclist ever to win three Olympic medals. At the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games he won silver in 1,000 metres. He went on to capture bronze medals in sprint at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games in Barcelona and Atlanta. Also a veteran of two Pan American Games, Harnett won gold in 1,000-metre time trial and bronze in sprint in 1987.

"I'm thrilled that such a successful and inspirational athlete as Curt will join the team as assistant chef," said Jacques Cardyn, who led the Canadian épée team to a fourth-place finish at the 1984 Olympic Games and to a gold medal at the 1983 Pan American Games. "He will be a huge asset to our Pan American Team, and a great role model and leader for the athletes."

A two-time World Championship silver medallist and Canadian champion more than 30 times over, Harnett set a world record of 9.856 seconds in the 200-metre time trial during a 1995 World Championship event in Bogota, Colombia, a record that would stand for 11 years.

Curt has sat on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Cycling Association, the Canadian Olympic Association, and the City of Toronto's Bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, focusing most of his attention towards athlete advocacy.
In 2005, he was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. The following year he was enshrined in the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame. He is currently a motivational speaker, writer, broadcaster, promoter and mentor.
From now through the Games, Harnett’s chief responsibility will be to work alongside Cardyn in helping provide overall leadership to the Canadian Team in their final training and preparation, as well as act as liaison and representative for the Team at the 2011 Pan American Games.

Steve Rover just reminded me he is now on the CCA board so I owe him an apology for lumping him with most of the others on that board who have been on it for years and brought us Sebrango, Lacelle, Lafreniere and now Mathieu, not a single one of them who had so much as seen a cycling race before being hired to run the sport for the country....

EVERYONE in cycling must be incompetent as far as you are concerned.. correct?

Jasmineminor,

You must know very little about the sport and very little about me.

First, regarding Harnett, voting him off was the stupidest thing those board members could have done, even the new CCA President Pierre Blanchard said that, he didn't get it either. What kind of message did it send to other star cyclists who might want to get involved.

Secondly, you probably know nothing about competitive cycling, Curt Harnett or what the guy accomplished. If Harnett wanted to be on the CCA board, he should have been given an honorary position for LIFE!!! For these pencil pushing bureaucrats to think he is not worthy of being on the Board, they have their heads up their ass. What guys like Harnett, Bauer, Walton, Singleton and others did for the sport has earned them the right to be on any board they want involved with the sport of cycling in Canada.

Jasmine, you just don't get it. It is about the riders and races, it should always be about the riders and races. EVERYTHING ELSE is window dressing.
