I like your point but it seems to me you are saying the opposite -- that the
nationalist desperately wants to be a relativist (for appearances?), but
deep down is an absolutist, defined by his exportation of his geographically
defined values.

Nations, and perhaps nationalism, imply ethnic relativism. Nationalism
as often implies moral absolutism, with the second step holding the
other nation(s) to that absolute, followed by whatever was intended
from the get-go. That especially applies to the Western concept of
nationalism that veered into jingoism in the 18th, 19th and 20th
centuries.

Modern movements based on nationalism don't appear to be using moral
relativism as a pretext or a subtext. IMO an acceptance of moral
relativism (and that is not as accepted as ethnic relativism) would
increase an awareness of differences in cultures but facilitate the
reduction of nationalism in its most pejorative meanings.

Interestingly enough, there was a 25-year flood in Central Otago here in
NZ at the same time last weekend as a similar level of flooding back at
my parent's place in Scotland. We've had the coldest wettest summer
since 1945 here. The sprinkler system is on :)

Judging from that maybe the best way to go north would be to go Ventura,
Santa Paula over to highway 99 to come up north instead of going to Paso
Robles although its more fun to take a straight shot from Paso Robles to
Oakhurst. My friend was heading up my way this week.

I followed your earthquake up there years ago in SF very closely on the news
as there was more more local coverage of that here. I been picking up tons
of local coverage on all kinds of stuff statewide. Haven't heard much about
SF, I guess they are doing well although there used to be lot of homes built
on the sand over there by the bay. Wonder how things are holding out between
SF and Santa Cruz Along the coast highway.

Lance bailed on Santa Barbara and was out for a ride near Sheryl's
pad in the LA hills when suddenly:

Caltrans refused to confirm rumors that Brian Lafferty was seen
running from the hill above the road.
(Not a picture of the La Conchita mudslide, BTW)

They BLEW UP that boulder today.
BLEW it UP!!!!

Now cyclists can get through. Whew.

Funny, funny! That reminds me of the link Chung posted. Captain Kirk tryed
to push a rock off a cliff and take out his opponent who was standing just
below. The boulder was considerly smaller then that one, but then again it
didn't kill the opponent either.

Or tens of episodes of Road Runner cartoons. Picture Brian in the
Coyote role. Roll? Whatever.
