Has anybody, besides me, ever tried this -- an inexpensive light new road bike is attainable by outfitting an old (non-suspended) mountain bike, found at garage sales etc. everywhere, with skinny tires (Tom Slicks). I ride a 1993 model Performance (Yes, the mail-order ppl) mountain bike with skinny tires, and it's wonderful. Only thing is you have to get a high quality older steed. --Trac

Yes, several times.
Just two weeks back my GF brought her "spare bike" a Ladies Giant Upland MTB over for a clean up. I fitted a better cassette, 11-28 7 speed, a couple of 65psi 26x1.5 city slicks, but it was still a bit on the slow side. I have a pair of 650c training wheels with 23mm Conti Gator Skins and a spare 650c rim on a Deore hub, so I let that fly. Well bugger me, it's faster than my road bike!!
