I thought the 2004 Athens mens road race was superb. Im just really surprised that they allowed Bettini to get away on the second last lap. Surely they must have known he would do something like that?
I thought McEwen's move in the breakway group was very interesting. Ive never seen him do that, and it really surprised me how well he went. People knock the guy but you've got to admire him more after that race.
Many riders of better spring classic pedigree really flopped in Athens.
I thought the course was great, the hill just long enough to test them, but not so long it turned the race into a hill climbers affair. Also, it made it hard for sprinters to roll around till the end then claim it. The perfect course I thought.
I would have loved to see Lance have a crack at that race. He disappointed me.
