Omega 3's and stomach probs?

Hey I figured out where my stomach aches were coming from. After my
colonoscopy, doc told me to increase my fiber to as much as 25mg a day. I
settled on high fiber cereals. I've been doing LC for 6 years with great
success and never any dietary probs before. For a couple of weeks I was
eating various high fiber cereals sprinkled with pysillium for a boost. Then
I found flaxmeal hot cereal. I had this on and off again bellyache and even
diarrhea. At first I thought it must have been the flu, which is going on
all over the place here in the northeast. It continued until I figured it
all out. Turns out it must be the Omega 3's in the flaxmeal. I have a severe
allergic reaction to only one other thing... salmon. Also high in the same
stuff. Anyone else have this problem? What other foods should I be
avoiding?

I don't know about the omega-3 allergy, but your statement about "increase
my fiber to as much as 25mg a day" is strange. That's the minimum
recommended for women. For guys it's 30mg/day.

That's what the GI specialist told me. Where do you get your stats from?
You really have to make an effort to get that much fiber in your diet for it
to be a minimum.

I started getting nauseaus earlier this year from taking borage and flax
oil. I have flax cereal almost every day for breakfast, and I think the
combination was too much. I'm fine just eating the cereal.

mg? I generaly think in terms of grams of fiber per day, and 25 to 30 g
sounds like the recommended about, not the minimum.

Yes, it can take some effort. You really need to build up on the fiber. I
once, not too long ago as I recall, got a buttload of fiber in a day. Yeah.

I really hate this "recommended" thing. If nothing else, we have learned in
this NG that each body is different, but the "recommendations" assume that
we are all alike. We're not. I probably get around 20-25 grams of fiber a
day, have no stomach problems and have regular bowel movements. But that's
just me. Everyone else might be different. And probably are.

Those are stats I found on several websites and I average between 25 and
35g fibre/day with no effort. I eat a lot of veggies and have incorporated
wheat and oat bran daily on 60g net carbs/day.

Dietary Fiber: Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)

According to the current US Dietary Guidelines, issued by the US
government, fiber intake is age-related.

For Adults Under the Age of 50
The recommended daily fiber intake is 25 grams for women and 38 grams
for men.

For Adults Over the Age of 50
The recommended daily fiber intake is 21 grams for women and 30 grams
for men.
For Optimum Health, Eat High-Fiber Foods Not Supplements

It is best to get your dietary fiber naturally from high-fiber foods
rather than solely from bran or from fiber supplements. Some fiber
supplements have caused severe gastrointestinal discomfort, including
bloating, diarrhoea or even blockage.
Dietary Fiber - Net Carbs - Low Carb Diets

Because fiber is an indigestible carbohydrate, it is not usually
included in the 'net carb' content of foods.

I take fish oil and flax oil supplements every evening. So far, I haven't
had any kind of reaction at all. So, maybe it's not the Omega 3s per se but
the flax.

Bev can you list what an average days meals are for you, and the fiber
content? Maybe I'm eating more fiber than I think? I eat alot of veggies,
but I can't find enough fiber. Thanks!

These are my meals from yesterday and are pretty typical. You can find my
recipes for the Pea Soup, Cornbread Muffins and Coconut Bran Muffins by
doing a google search on this newsgroup. I'm using whole wheat pastry
flour in my muffins now instead of the Atkins Bake Mix to get the carbs up
a bit. The Garden Style & Mushroom Meat Sauce is a bottle of Carb Options
Garden Style Sauce, 1 pound of lean ground beef and a can of drained
mushroom stems and pieces simmered together for 15 minutes. It makes 6
servings.
Totals according to FitDay -- fibre 29g, net carbs 60g, protein 86g

Breakfast (blended as a smoothie) -- fibre 3g, net carbs 13g, protein 15g
-----------
1/2 cup plain organic yogurt
1/2 cup unsweetened soy milk
1 tablespoon vanilla whey powder
3 chunks frozen pineapple
1 cup frozen diced rhubarb
6 drops Sweetzfree
2 tablespoons hemp oil

Morning Snack -- fibre 1g, net carbs 7g, protein 4g
-----------------
16 roasted, salted whole cashews

Lunch -- fibre 11g, net carbs 19g, protein 22g
-------
1 serving Bev's LC Pea Soup
1 Bev's LC Cornbread Muffin

Afternoon Snack -- fibre 5g, net carbs 10g, protein 4g
-------------------
1 Bev's LC Coconut Bran Muffin

Dinner -- fibre 9g, net carbs 12g, protein 41g
-------
1 serving Garden Style & Mushroom Meat Sauce
56g Dreamfields Spaghetti
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese
1 cup romaine lettuce
1 cup spinach
1 tablespoon Carb Options Ranch Dressing

You're eating alot more bread and carbs than most of us here. That
accounts for your big fiber numbers. My challenge is to increase the fiber
without the bread and pasta.

Then choose higher fibre veggies. Cole slaw, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.
I don't eat pasta every day either. Even when I was at 30g net carbs/day
and not eating my muffins, I managed to get a minimum of 25g fibre without
using supplements. I used to put 1/4 cup of flax seeds in my morning
smoothie but don't need to now.
How much fibre are you currently getting? It sounds like you've been at a
very low level for a long time. The reason you're having problems when you
do add the fibre is that your body can't handle them yet. You need to do
this very gradually or you will end up with a lot of stomach upset, etc.

I do eat all those veggies you listed. I'm going to try and slowly
increase as you suggest and see if I can avoid that bloated achey feeling...
thanks!
