So, as im not buying a subway 8 i thought id go look in our local cycle king
which has a sale on at the moment, not expecting to see anything worthwhile.

However, i did come across what looks like a 2004 model Raleigh Chinnook
with a front disc brake and the twist shifters that i want, as well as front
forks to ease any bumps on my right wrist.

Now shop prices that i can find on these appear to be £160 or so, however in
the sale its down to £95.

At this point i only want a fairly basic bike but this does seem to
represent (to me) fairly good value?

Thoughts?

You'll get loads of comments sayig that all the forks are doing is adding weight rather than helping you over the bumps (an entry level pair of suspension forks cost £100). Only you can decide if the bike is what you want, but think about the weight of it, as you'll be dragging it up any hills you try anc climb.

The same thing can be said for the disc brakes as the forks a good set of V brakes will cost £50 (or more) so dpn't expect fantastic perfromance from discs on a bike costing not much more than a set of v's.

Having said that there are people here who have a 'cheap'n'cheerful' bike and liek them, whilst orhers (myself included) spend 'far too much' (quote form SWMBO) on bikes. Try and get a test ride on it, and then compare it to other bikes an the £200 level and see if you can tell the difference (my betting is that you will quite easily). as for justifying the extra £100, wel lif you ue it for transport instead of car/bus/train, it won;t take long to save that much miney.

I dont need it to elp me get over bumps, purely as an extra cushion for my
right wrist as I want to avoid any extra pain on it from its break last
year. and i cant imagine that they'd add that much weight. Oh and as its
bedford, there aint many hills :)

Brakes is brakes as far as im concerned, its only that i wasnt expecting to
come across a bike with a disc for less than a ton

The nearest with the spec i want is £200 but its a halfords ammaco or
whatever they are called. And id rather have a raleigh.
