That's a good thing! But browswers like firefox let you defend against
web downloads. And turning off Java (NOT javascript) is also a good idea
unless you need it for specific web apps. Also with fast connections,
you can zero your browser cache (or I.E. insists on 1 Mb.). That's a few
of my strategies, anyway.

I did have a keylogger slip into my new laptop but it might have been there
when Dell added all the loads of useless [censored] software (imho).

Wireless with WAP and firewall... I'm invisible to the internet, except
while you're reading this (ICMP port closed "Knock, Knock"... no reply).

if you are using xp, and you are logged in under a limited user
account?
it is impossible, try as you may, to get infected.

I would never approach a a questionable site while logged in as admin

I log in as Admin all the time and maybe it's Russion roulette but I've
been lucky so far. I just got XP on my new laptop, leaving Win2k Pro
behind. I miss Win2kPro at the momenet. I've found my Admin services and
shut down the major holes as before.

I'll create a limited account, I'm just not used to limits.

just hit the windows key (to the right of the ctrl key) and then L

winlogo + L

or same as Start>Logoff>Switch User>

once both accounts are loaded in the same boot...

switching is fast...

and you are 100% safe to surf anywhere, no matter how aggressive or

BTW, for others, when you delete e-mail from Outlook Express it's never
actually deleted.

Search for "Deleted Items" will (should) reveal the deleted items file in
the user's documents folder somewhere. This should be ERASED not trashed.

Once erased it's "practically" impossible to recover, which with the
amound of spam isn't a bad thing.

Do you have Outlook (not Outlook Express) installed? The calendar function
allows you to schedule events for specific dates and times, as well as
repetitive events. It doesn't send you an email, but it does give very clear
notification.

The e-mail function allows you to schedule e-mails for specific dates and
times of the send. You could send these e-mails to yourself.

I send e-mails to myself from work sometimes as reminders, or even here
at home when I think of something I may forget later!

I also write notes on the bathroom mirrors with permanent markers.
They clean off with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel. ;-)

As I recall, when I used Outlook, it did have a sound to let you know.

On a more basic level, I have installed "Karen's alarm clock." I use it as a
timer for cooking/chores while I'm working at the computer. With it, you
can set it to any song in your computer, any number of sounds. You can list
5 alarms and name them as to what they are for -- i.e., check on the bread.
But I think it is more for a daily timer.
PS, I have mine set loud to "Sweet Dreams, Baby" Roy Orbison -- always gets
me flying up off the chair!

One place you will always look, every day, at least a couple of times
per day is that bathroom mirror. ;-) That is why I put them there!
Use the corner of the mirror and date the messages...

I also use one edge for my ebay inventory shopping list.

I really need an email as I don't have my speakers turned on.

I see free services, I assume that means expect lots of junkmail. I
was hoping someone knew of an email reminder service I could buy.
As far as I'm concerned it should be a basic function of any email
software, but I don't see it on OE.

Download a calendar from MS Works. I've used it for years, however, I just
recently went to one using Word because I can control fonts better. Word
calendars (for me) is not the best way to go for scheduling in advance. I
schedule events a year and more in advance using the Works calendar.

Same here as far as email notification. It wouldn't be adequate except as a
back-up measure for already calendared events.

I have an account at Yahoo. I have a "my.yahoo" page with news
headlines, TV schedules, weather, etc on it. I also have an email
account there and a calendar. I can put in appointments in it and set
2 different reminder times. I usually set one for the day before and
one on the day. I get email. And since I have the mail sent to my
yahoo account and "my. yahoo" is my homepage, as soon as I load my
browser I can see a note about mail.

I think I am going to have to do estimated taxes so that will go on
the calendar or I will be paying penalties.
