Ok, this is quite a bit off topic, but one never knows what may interest others.
I have sighted a Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus). well, to be truthful, it got in my parents
house and i barely saved it from the wrath of my fly-swatter wielding mother.
As it was a bit stunned, i had time enough to snap two pictures before it recovered and flew off.
http://tinyurl.com/eztp (sitting calmly on my back steps) http://tinyurl.com/eztt (sitting on my
hand for size comparison. index tip to thumb crease measures about 5.5 inches)
I managed to identify the moth from the following site. http://tinyurl.com/ezrp And given that there
are no confirmed reports in my county (or any near me for that matter), i have reported it to The
Lepidopterists' Society in hopes that they can correct the records to reflect this perhaps rare
sighting (last one i ever saw was about 5 years ago).
