So, what *is* the connection between posting in a solar power
discussion forum, and subsequently receiving spam trying to sell me
Viagra?

Answers on a postcard (of any size) please.

Viagra's been superseded, apparently - I can't wait to try Gouranga.
Gouranga Gouranga Gouranga! That which brings the *highest* happiness!!

At least, according to a gentleman who wrote to me a day or so ago.

You make the error of believing spam is targeted marketing. It isn't.
They just hope that if they can e-mail everyone on the planet, one
person might buy their product. The posting just gave them one more
e-mail address towards that target. And the reason they keep e-mailing
is some moron somewhere _is_ buying.

They just trawl for valid addies. A nicely munged one helps, a good
spam filter gets the rest. It's still annoying to have to do this to
get your in-box useable though.

I know how it works, and how to stop it, I was just posing a question,
hoping to get some humourous answers ...

The Rector sounded almost disappointed that the flood of bored
housewives whose affections were being advertised for his
consideration were, to a woman, an ocean away...

At least he had the presence of mind not to click the "unsubscribe"
link. Well done that cleric.
