Was gonna post this to RBR, but that rec is a nuthouse and I'm fairly
certain I wouldn't get any useable responses.

Six Day?
Keirin?
Madison?

Any other track race types or concepts for the uninitiated? Or perhaps
a Sheldon-like web page for noobs?

TIA, I read about these races now and then but never really understand
what the heck is going on.

You mean like:
"Dumbass:
Stay on the road.

Thanks,

Mogambo"

Sprint,

Points,

500 meter flying start and standing start time trials
km 2km etc,

Pursuit, various distances,

Team pursuit, various distances,

Motorpace.

There's others I can't think of at the moment.

Look up "velodrome" and you should find a lot.

Teams are often made up from one track specialist and one road racer,
which leverages the marketing of road racing to get fans to pay money
to watch races during the winter months. It's also a great excuse to
head for the continent for a weekend (there has been no UK six day
race for years) to drink Belgian beer and pig out on frites with mayo.

There are entries for Keirin and Madison on my Bicycle Glossary

http://sheldonbrown.com/glossary

A "six-day" is a madison that runs for six days, midnight to midnight.
It is the longest event that can be done continuously without riding on
Sunday, which used to be illegal due to superstition.

This is probably irrelevant, but the one-liner I got from somebody a few weeks
ago when I asked about velodrome racing: "Chess - with physical consequences."
