Performance Century shorts are pretty good and affordable. A word of
warning: buy high end bicycling shorts at least 1 size larger than you
would buy for anything else. Curiously, cheap shorts seem to be sized
more like what I experience in other types of clothing. I'm 5'9", 170
lbs. Sure, I could stand to lose 10-15 lbs, but I seldom need to buy
large anything, except good cycling shorts. Bet on it: the more
expensive they are, the smaller they will be.

"Best" is a very subjective term. Personally, I like Nalini and
Castelli better than Pearl Izumi and Pearl Izumi better than
Performance. Others may rank them differently. The only way to really
tell is to try them.

I also agree that Assos are excellent. But try Boure', which is a
small company in Durango, CO. I find thier Elite Pro Shorts to be as
comfortable as my Assos at less than half the price.
