I have been cycling a lot in the past year and a half. I have been riding about 3-5 hrs daily, and the majority of my riding has been climbing mountains. often, by the end of the day, my knees feel worn out. if they begin to hurt, ill give myself a couple days rest. Last weekend i cycled about 150 miles and although i didn't experience any pain during the ride, when i woke up the next day, my right knee had throbbing pain. Also above the knee cap, there is an unusual discolored oval spot about 3 inches long and about an inch wide. I'm scheduling time to visit an orthopedist, but i'm curious if anybody has had this happen to them. I had a physical exam about a month ago, and my doctor said i may have PFPS. I dont really want to stop cycling for a few months unless i have to, but i don't want to do irreparable damage to my knee. I'd appreciate some advice from experienced cyclists, Stretches, rehabilitation techniques, supplement recommendations etc. thanks

Not many of us have 20 to 35 hours to ride a week. Could be overuse, poorly fitting bike or numerous issues. Best to seek advice from a professional with experience and access to diagnostic tools.

I can say that I have some pretty advanced patellofemoral arthritis in my left knee and riding, even hard or long hours does not exacerbate the issue. If anything, it makes it fell better - but then we are all different.

thanks for the response. i got an appointment to see a knee doctor at the end of the week. i also started taking some supplements including:
Glucosomine
Chondroitin
MSM
Omega 3

don't know if this will help, but my mom has arthritis and swears by this combination.

Those supplements will definetly help you. Have you ever tried hyperbaric oxygen therapy (hbot)? A lot of athletes use hbot for recovery immediately post training which really helps with injuries, energy, stamina, anti-aging and many more . Your knee is hurting because of joint, tendon, a muscle injury or strain. Hbot drastically speeds the recovery of injuries because it provides more oxygen to the damaged tissue to help repair and strengthen immediatly after an injury and for the long haul.

Interesting. Would spending an hour at the bottom of a 4m deep pool, breathing pure O2, have any benefit ?

I went to a knee specialist, and did some xrays and an MRI. Luckily my bones, and muscles are in good condition. He suggested that it is probably patella related tissue damage. I'm scheduled to go to physical therapy next week. In the interim period, I've been looking at youtube videos pertaining to patella therapy. How helpful are all of the the straps and foam rollers, and other PT products? I've been using some massage techniques on my knees, and it seems alleviate mild pain. I am able to run on the eliptical machine without much irritation, but I am noticing a mild twinge when I cycle. I've been off the bike for about 2 weeks. I'm wondering how long I should rest my knees. If you got any experience with this, i'd appreciate some guidance.
