pain when bending knee

Hello,
I need some advice. Mom (57) is not a runner, but she is on her foot
a lot and recently developed a problem in her left knee. Knee is
swollen
above cap and in the side (anterior). She feels pain, stiffness and
some
tightness when bending her knee. She is able to walk but feels pain
when bending and stretching.

The back of her knee does not hurt, but the front of the knee hurts and
so does the anterior side (side facing the other leg).

I posted here since I saw other posters with knee issues.

Please advice if you have experience w/ these symptoms and
can offer any advice on treatments. She is currently taking arnica
montana (has no insurance), but w/ no improvement seen.

THANKS

Your description of Mom's problem is mind numbingly boring.

Are you sure it isn't a running injury?

Other than rest and ice and maybe a little ibuprofen to relieve the
pain, I'd say the smartest thing to do would be to see a doctor. Of
all the joints in the body, the knee is the one that takes the greatest
beating.

Is your mom a runner? If she's a runner, thats one thing. Is it just
pain in her knee from an accident or an injury? If it's not related to
running, the best you can do is so ibuprofen and ice.

If it's running related you can alter her technique in some ways to
help alleviate the pain she gets. Hope she's alright.

No, she is not a runner and it's not injury either. She was on
her foot a lot doing gardening, etc. Lately, the swelling has
diminished and mostly she feels pain/stiffness when walking
up and down the stairs.

Shouldn't the poster be getting advice from a gardening group then?

It makes as much sense as asking joggers for opinions.

I'm close to your moms age and have the same similar problem and mine was caused by twisting my knee while hiking. I pack it on ice, also wear a stretch knee brace and keep it up when possible. It's been this way for a long time and by taking care of it as I can it's not worse, thank goodness. However, she should consult a doctor.

Another suggestion and good advice, Ignore Miss Thorpe. Sounds like she needs to grow up and wants attention, so the best advice there is exactly what you're doing and not giving her any. Great Job!

I will tell you what some doctors do: **** ER

They make their ample incomes by making big deals.

It's always, today, drugs and or surgery, never "you're older,

you can't abuse your joints anymore, rest and ice and don't

spark arthritic episodes, that's what you did."

No, instead, today, a doctor is more apt to say,

"Let's have an image made of that knee. I'll send you to a kneetobbleist"
(joke name for a specialty that does not exist)

Dr. kneetoppleist will send her to an MRI clinic for a two thousand dollar MRI.

"Ah, just what I feared, you need a new knee."

What's the best way to get that, doctor?

(((drum roll before the answer))))

"Be reborn. Otherwise, I can refer you to a kneehackologist."

(((the doctors, in sync, ruined my best elder pal's last years, with
not-needed knee surgery, from which he never recovered, and suffered like a dog)))

Poster, I am fifty seven years, too.
I will never submit for any elective surgery.
I've been around the block a few times, and read of medicine,
and talked to hundreds of ruined people.

-the good doctors are out there.
=the venal doctors and shallow doctors cannot be told from "good",
until it is too late for you, the "patient", the patsy...
