Hello Everyone, I've got a question about paint. I am in the process of rebuilding an old(1980's) road bike. I'm re-painting it with enamel. I've got a clear top coat that I want to use that is a lacquer; Can I spray a lacquer over the enamel or will it react badly? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Lacquer will typically cause an air dried enamel finish to craze ...

If you were to "dust" the lacquer onto the surface with a multitude of very light coats then you might be able to apply the lacquer without the underlying enamel surface crazing.

If the enamel is heat dried then it may be hard enough to resist crazing.

Thanks Alfeng. I knew I had heard " something" about mixing lacquer and enamel. I'm glad I asked!! I think that, rather than taking a chance on screwing up my paint job, I'll just get some enamel clear coat to use instead. Thanks again!!!

preparing the frame for the paint job is half the project, i have seen special machines using sand to do just that, very labour intensive
