I visited Stanford University last summer and rented a road bike on-line at campusbikeshop.com . They had basic rental bikes but I paid extra for a nice Fuji Roubaix road bike rental. Amazing riding in the bay area, with many group rides riding every day. Palo Alto appears to be one of the few cities where a bike can get you around safely. I was cautioned about parking my bike at the Palo Alto train station because of theft.
