Recently purchased a high end bike. Noted on both Durace brakes that came with the bike, above the brake shoe on the lever side, there is a gray patch (for lack of a better word). Anyone know what's going on here? The Durace 7800 groupo I purchased in 2004 had no such "patch". Am I getting some half hearted repair job here or is this on the brake for some other reason?

Peel it off. Brakes come wif those so that they don't get marred before installation.

+1 its just a protective patch, to prevent the return spring from pulling the calipers close and allowing the cable bolt/ quick release guide to dent the right hand arm of the caliper.
