I got a new road bike K2 Mach 2 for Chrismas, Just got back from vacation so I haven't had a chance to ride it yet. I've had my mountain bike (Bridgestone) for over ten years. I've never worn bike shoes, just sneakers and the pedals on my mountain bike just had the straps.
The new bike has diferent pedals with toe clips and straps. The pedal has a V shaped peice of metal that sticks up a little around where the ball of the foot would be, I assume a cleat would attach to this. Althought I could be wrong. I've searched online for shoes and cleats, and all the cleats seem to go to a specific pedal. I plan on getting a pair of bike shoes but what do I need for this type of pedal.

My guess is that the pedal would be the Ritchey Logic Pro V-3. The V-3 cleat will run you about $20. You might want to take your bike into a bike shop and double check.
