Alvaro Pino won the Vuelta in 1986 in a fashion almost as controverial as the 1985 Vuelta by moving past Robert Millar in the final ITT with the assistance of the moto escorts. He was DS for at least one Spanish team prior to moving to Swiss based Phonak, but I can't recall where. Did he spend time with Kelme as DS? The Spaniards are doing great and if Tyler fails to get the top rung I doubt he will blame his team this year.
Does anyone have his CV for team management or remember where he was prior to Phonak?

His stage victory that day may be controversial. His GG win, not. He had 30" on Millar before the ITT and won another half minute that day.

Pino became Kelme's DS soon after he retired in 1991. His biggest achievement was the Escartín's Tour podium in 1999. He left Kelme that same year to go on sabbatical prior to joining Phonak. He's generally considered a good DS, although has a reputation of focusing too much on a single leader. That may hurt Phonak, where I see Sevilla as strong as Hamilton in the mountains. But if Tyler delivers, he can expect to have the entire team at his service.

I saw a video of the middle ITT (Stage 11) when Pino took the jersey from Millar. When Millar came off the start ramp he was met with a hail of bottles and cans. On the hills the crowd was pressing right on top of him with their fists extended in his face - only pulling them back at the last second. Pretty intimidating...
