My co-worker (and good friend) at my bike shop has me sized up for a road bike. being a mountain biker i am new to road bike sizing.

I have odd proportions, so here it goes:

I am 5'9"
I wear a size 13 shoe.
I have an 86 cm inseam

I have many more measurements that i can provide upon request.

He said I would fit a 58cm size road frame. what do you think?

Based purely on your inseam, yeah, a 58 would probably do it for you. But you cannot jus base it on that ............ you need to figure the type of reach you will have to get to the bars. You don't want to have to really stretch to reach just so that your legs fit over the frame okay ..........

You may want to look into one of the companies that make a "compact" frame like the Giant OCR and TCR frames. These have a lot more flexibility for sizing because they have a sloping top tube like a mtn. bike does.

There's more to it than that. There are some good fit calculators on the web that will give you a good idea of the frame size you need (provided you punch in accurate information). Competitive Cyclist has a pretty good one here:

yeah, my buddy decided on the size by about 10-12 measurements. He told me to call him today about different frame geometries and which one will provide the best fit for me.

i ride a 57 frame 5'9"5(177cm)
90 cm inseam
but i have small medium feet for my height 9-9.5(42.5)
mine was all measured and calculated at the store where i bought my bike

I'm 5'10 and ride a 55cm frame, but then I've shorter legs in relation to my body, plus I prefer a lightly more relaxed riding position
The key measurement is the top tube, and you need to know your trunk measurement to gauge that.

Try the measuring system at http://www.wrenchscience.com it's pretty accurate, and then use that info to try some.
