I wouldn't call the writer of the racist note simply an ignoramus, which implies only a lack of
knowledge, even a willful lack. It is vicious and malignant. I can think of nothing more unwanted
by such trollers than to be ignored. If the subject has interest, it certainly is not because of
such posts.
The beaches and pools as well as almost all public and private services in Chicago were segregated.
Only the schools were not except for extensive de facto which was true not only for color, but
countries of origin of families, such as Italian, Polish, Jewish, Asian, neighborhoods. It was not
peaceful. The frequent race riots have become legendary.
However, it seems everyone learned to swim. Lake Michigan was free and accomodated everyone at some
beach or another.
