with a polar power output unit I imagine that it is vital to keep the chain very clean - which could be bothersome when the chain oil becomes emulsified in wet conditions - any ideas on this

Its not a significant influence unless the chain is covered in mud. Normal chain lubricant and eve dirt are less than 1% of the chain weight. I remove my chain for cleaning and put it on the scale...I could only measure a 1-2 gram difference between dirty, clean and dry and lubed.

Cosmetically, it makes sense to keep things clean. I installed a clear chainstay protector over the tension sensor to keep things cleaner. But lubing with White Lightning keeps it cleaner.

The FAQ on their site says that it isn't an issue.
