Do you use Average power for this interval or Normalized power to "estimate"? It can be quite different... I know AC says only about 5% but that is significant, and I am over that (about 370 avg vs +400 NP, 60MP). My P/w is much better using a NP derived FTP than avg P... ;) so if we are racing power #'s I am going with NP :D

I was about to post asking how many are using NP and how many posters used avg, as only Clausfod made the distinction (that I saw) somewhere in the middle of this thread. Perhaps it doesn't make a difference with most folks.

slightly off topic, would a NP>Avg P greater than 5% indicate a large AWC???

Yeah I think most people need to use more accurate methods of measuring rather than estimating 1hour power. Any estimation based on an interval less than 20 or even 40 minutes seems to be too optimistic. I don't have a power tap, but I have used the SRM velo cycle thing in the HPL lab at my university. I have been very fortunate to get professional testing for free by volunteering for grad student research projects.

For the last two weeks I did 6 45 minute MLSS intervals at 240W in the lab at 90-98rpm avg. The other day I went back and did another one and could have easily done 240W for a full hour, if not more, or ramped the power up. I bet I could have done more like 250. I've been gaining alot of fitness and I bet by the end of summer I should be back at 275W again, maybe higher. The 45 minute intervals were based off of what I did in a 2 minute protocol MAP test. Even though I was fatigued and gave up early, the anaerobic threshold values were still accurate enough. These values place me right in Cat 3 on the chart...as of now, I'm only racing XC, but I hope those values are reflective! I definitely know how to push myself in a race. Now I just need to lose 2 more kilograms.

It seems the verdict though is not to estimate any CP using a fluid trainer...you NEED a power meter!!!

Not necessarily, it really just represents a more variable ride.

thank you. I picked up a late-season flu just after that and dropped an honest 20W over ten days but as of last week I'm back on track :)

    Again?!

    Wow...

    Great job, Rick.

Has your increase in FTP translated to better racing performance?

thanks guys. Yes - only one official 45k TT this year so far. Won by 2-min, PB and course record on a hilly course not suited to my lard_ass at all ;-)

Hilly RR on Sunday - finished 4th behind 3 good climbers but by only 5-seconds which is a huge improvement for me from last yr. I honestly couldn't even ride with these guys on a hilly training ride let alone a race. I typically would be several minutes down in a race on that terrain. This is all open men's racing and I'm not exactly in their age bracket either.

I have to say I've never felt so fresh at the e/o of a road race. IOW, I coulda/shoulda put in another couple of digs over the last 5k despite being off the front for over half the race. It takes a while to get used to 'new' legs if you know what I mean :).

a small question for you guys at 4 watt or + per kilogram are you pro's or ear pro's?
You guys must be there in the front of the race right any of you doing international races?

Believe it or not, 4+ w/kg @FTP is about what a good US Cat 3 would be able to do...

I posted mine just to make the newbies feel more welcome. Been training 'seriously' for about 7 months [riding for about 1.5 years].

    Oh :-/  well thanks
what kind of leves would the 'good' cat 2 and 1 competitors be at.

I cant post mine yet as riding over 40 mintues is really bad for me at the moment, so its a nice zero watt :(.i'm lowest on the rank. Luckly i read some threatment that might help me out of my myserie for good. Insoles only work partially on my overpronated foot i am going to the so many'est doctor but their appears to be a new operative treatment that is specifickly designed for people with my problem.:)
And the best thing of all is that i'll never have to wear bulky shoes in my life afterwards!
