Tape up the teeth on a 22 inch pair of water pump pliers (channel locks) and have at it. You don't even have to remove the derailler.🙂

I was on a self-contained tour and dropped my chain and it somehow the bottom of the chain got wrapped up around the freewheel and bent the rear derailer hanger in. I removed the rear derailer and used a 10" adjustable wrench to bend the hanger back. No taping required. I was about 30 miles from the nearest town and boy was I glad I had the 10" adj. along.
