Poor quality tyre

My couple of month old tyre from Halfords seems to have failed, almost catastrophically. It seems to
be tearing away from the rim in more than one place simultaneously. I deflated to save the tube
immediately after taking these pictures.

I have never seen anything like it in my n years of cycling and as well as demanding a refund will
be making a fuss that not only is it expensive rubbish but dangerous.

Am I alone with this experience ?

It can happen and not always the tyres fault. Check first that your brake pads are square on the
rim and do not ride up onto the side wall of the tyre. Quite a common cause of this type of
failure. It also seems to be a problem on some rims and on some tyres that are heavily loaded or
under inflated. There are also some tyres that are either faulty or prone to it. I've mainly had it
happen on tandems.

Looks to me as if the brake block has been rubbing on wall of the tyre, unless of course you've got
disc brakes.

Forget the scientific reasons! I bet they were manufactured in the far East. In my experience - yes
I did buy one a few years ago - they are ****!

On saying that they are good for lots of miles - reckon you should get at least 294
out of them.

I have used Halfords own branded tyres when hard up and vowed never to go back to them.

Like remoulds only not as good! Exactly the same experience with their rip off of Michelin
city grippers.

With respect this is what you get when you buy bike parts from a car shop. I have
many years experience with bikes, although not in the trade, and I have never met an
assistant yet at Halfords that had a clue about bikes. They are invariably YTS
teenagers or similar, who are there under sufferance, and the nearest they have ever
got to cycling is to do a few bunnyhops of the kerb outside their school. Take the
tyres back, demand a full refund, and then go to a reputable bike shop and get some
decent tyres. If you are not mechanically minded ask them to check your brake
alignment and make sure your rims are in good order. I am sure they will be only to
pleased to help, but it might be wise not to mention Halfords or they may be laughing
to much to look at your bike.

Reminds me of a brand of tyre I came across in the late 1970s that was made in the far east for kids
bikes. It was called "Dae Yung". I kid you not!

I've had it happen on a Nokian tyre (Finland) and a Conti tyre and had it not happen on a cheap Chen
Shing tyre, all on the same wheel.

I had some halfords ones. The back tyre developed a blister on teh tread. It got up to a
centimetre or so in size over a few days (I noticed it because tehre was a distinct bump as the
wheel turned) and then finally went. I scrapped both tyres and bought schwalbe city jets with
which I have been happy.

I don't think he has. In my youth I wrote off a tyre through brake misadjustment, and there was a
clearly visible worn strip on the sidewall of the tyre. There's no such worn strip on this tyre -
look at the circles with crosses in; they look fresh and new. No, I'd say that was a
manufacturing fault.

I got a refund and an inner tube (not Halfords brand) thrown in. The chap in the shop agreed it was
a manufacturing fault. My brake blocks are ok, really.

I have only used Halfords because of their opening hours and don't make a habit of it.

The new one was £6 (Halfords noname was £9.9999999), Schwalbe from University Cycles,
Mitchums Corner, Cambridge a fine shop where I normally go only let down by it being a sh*t
to park the car near.

This is not entirely fair. I have met mechanics in Halfords who were interested and helpful and
knowledgeable about bikes. You need to seek out the specialist.

Most LBS and even a lot of _car_ shops sell similar quality tyres to the Halfords variety, only they
are about about £4 cheaper apiece. For the £9ish Halfords charge you can pick up a decent brand
almost anywhere else.
