Positioning STIs on Handlebar?

i've noticed the trend (and subsequent redesign) of STI shifters to accommodate a more vertical position on the handlebar. are there any good articles or can you offer any advice on setting up a proper STI position?

i am using the slightly older DA 9-speed STIs, ST-7700, so they are not as rounded as the new ST-7800.

The proper position is the one that feels the best. Set them up without bar tape, then get up on a trainer or just sit on the bike leaning against a wall. Move them around until you like where they are.

Shucks...I may even ride mine for a month,changing poition slightly till it gets right. Ther sure as hell ain't no magic formula.
