Power profile and age

I thought my whole racing life (since1980) that I was a pure sprinter. I'd make every break and top finish most local races in the 80's. I didn't train for the TT as I was slow. Fast foreword to 2007 with my PT and after 3 months my profile on the chart is dead flat. At 43 I can't hit 1200w (1053 best 5sec) and have a FTP around 290. I have very good race sense and usually finish high. I won and got second last weekend, so I still can sprint.
To get to the meat of the question, had I had a PT in the eighties would I still have been flat or does everyones profile flatten out as they age. By the way all the old guys can TT, does it actually begin to slope to the right? That would kind of suck, as I've never TTed so well (my TT times are very good for 1980--but this is 2007:)) and my sprint seems pretty weak. The TTers just seem to go better and better.
 
Guido Bontempi was a top 80s sprinter. His last Tour de France win was from a solo break. I think you lose zip but maintain endurance.
