Taking precautions
Race-day guidelines for preventing hyponatremia:
1. Drink no more than 8 ounces of fluids every 20 minutes, preferably
an electrolyte-replacement drink.
2. Eat one packet of salt (such as can be found at a fast-food
restaurant) 20-30 minutes before the start of the race. Eat another
packet about halfway through the race.
3. Stop taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as Advil,
aspirin, Aleve and ibuprofen) 24 hours before the race and don't resume
taking them until six hours after the race. If you need an
anti-inflammatory to deal with race-day pain, take Tylenol.
