I bought some new tubes recently (on e-bay) that have smooth, long valve = stems

http://www.netacc.net/~helarson/

(crudely-built site alert ;-) )

Never seen anything quite like them. My present tubes have small nuts to = lock them to the rim.=20

Can I use these without some mechanism to lock them to the rim? If not, = what part or piece
do I need?

Thanks.=20

I did on my bike. Just slightly annoying to pump.

Couldn't see the picture - in your HTML the .jpg has a hard-coded path to an "E:" drive.

These stems are long enough ( 2" )that they are probably made for aero = rims. Regardless, the nuts
on presta valves serve no useful purpose and = make the probability of getting a pinch flat much
greater if the nut is = tightened when you first pump the tire up. To pump the tire up from a = flat
condition, just hold the stem out through the hole with one thumb = pressing the tread of the tire
as you attach the pump to the valve with = the other hand. (man, that's easier to do than explain) I
can send you = a picture if necessary.

I verified the pump works just fine last night. The information about = the use of the "locknut" was
also very helpful.

I suppose I now <must> go buy some aero rims! :) Dave

Basically Gene is saying to hold onto the stem until you can get the pump head as far down the stem
as possible. Lock it in place and pump. I have had plenty of these tubes and they are just fine.
Only thing is if your gasket/o-ring on the pump head is worn, it may slip off. Chas

Hi Cletus Smooth Presta valve stems are a standard Michelin part. I use them in both long and short
stem 622s Here is a pic of the part. www.doctorvision.com/bikee/michelintube.jpg

The valve stem is replaceable, although a new tube can be had for $4-5.
