Mini pumps do take some tume. Crank Brothers makes a nice compact model with two modes; 1) high volume and 2) high pressure. You use the former first and then the latter to obtain max pressure. Floor pumps are the only real option unless you're stuck on the side of the road.

take a look at the Cyclaire pump - its sort of half way between a track pump and a carry pump. Its just won some awards here in the UK and seems to do a good job.
