Preventing Rust

How do you prevent (surface) rust on bolts etc - especially those as used in
head stems and aero bars that cop a fair bit of sweat.

I seem to remember a thread a while back about using vasoline/petroleum
jelly to coat thee bolts to prevent direct contact with sweat to reduce the
possibility of rust. Searched but couldn't find it.

Am I remembering it correctly? Is this a good idea? What are options are
there?

As always, any advice is appreciated.

Only long term solution I found was to replace uncoated steel with
galvanised bolts - not that expensive but can be time consuming finding
them.

Why they don't give you corrosion resistant bolts to start with is one of
the Really Big Questions - cruddy screws for bottle cages are a particular
bug bear of mine.

Oils, greases and the like seem to create much mess for little long term
protection.

Isn't Titanium the answer to everthing?

Seriously though, seek out your local engineering shop and replace the
exposed bolts with Stainless equivalents.

Chuck said bolts in the bin and replace with stainless steel ones. Austain Fasteners in Auburn (Sydney) are good, check the yellow pages for other cities.
