  1. I'm going to rant since my training has been shaky lately. I've done a 50,55, and 50 mile weeks in
the last 3 weeks. I have felt pretty good for all these weeks. This last saturday I put my first 20
miler in for my marathon plan. I have three more 20milers. I tried to run on sunday and quit after
~1 mile. I felt like [censored]. My legs were dead and I was not moving very well. I took the day off, ran
three miles yesterday and felt okay. Now today I ran 11 and things started off fine. After about
3miles my heart rate jacked up to the 160s (high aerobic for me) and my pace slowed. It was a little
warmer today than it has been recently (65 F vs 35
    F) and I may have been a little dehydrated. Judging that my HR went up so fast I don't think I am
    physiologically tired from lactic acid.

I can't figure it out. i've got a 1/2 marathon on saturday and i'm getting paranoid. i keep thinking
that I'm unravelling and things are falling apart. I know they're not but I can't help thinking it.

Any advice on how I should do my next three days in order to prep for this race?

My plan is to take 2 days off after the race and then hit the decks running for 4 weeks and taper
for two weeks for my marathon. i plan on doing a a 55,60,60, and 65 for my next four big weeks.

    thanks for listening.

Sounds like you're over doin' in. Or you could be dehyrdated. Drink tons of water!

  3. Joe, I can't remember much about your running background, so forgive if this is too basic, but this
sounds like simple overtraining, in principle if not in the clinical sense. For one thing, if you
are RACING a half this weekend, it wasn't ideal planning to do a 20 miler one week prior, regardless
of your marathon program. Even for a half you need a mini-taper, in my opinion. In your place, I
would not run at all the rest of this week, maybe just a dead slow 30 minute run on Thursday to keep
loose, to give your body a well needed rest period before you hammer the half on Saturday, take a
couple of days off after that and then really push the envelope for the month after that. Also, not
sure about your age, but I'm 48 and never ever ever would run even 1 mile the day after a 20 miler.
Your body was telling you the truth last Sunday, so you did well to stop. Take it easy, dude. You
know the mantra--get to the starting line healthy for your marathon. Good luck. I am delighted to be
conversing with you about running and not that OT stuff. Good to focus on what we have in common--a
    love for running. -chris

  4. Joe, how much experience do you have running 50+ miles per week ? Your particular physiology may not
be well adapted to that kind of mileage. You can only learn from experience how much it too much.
You may have crossed that threshold and your body is telling you so.

You can not set up some kind of "program" with set distances per week unless you have done it before
with success. If the mileage is too aggressive you will crash and burn.

I am not saying you can not run an excellent marathon on less mileage. Actually, just the opposite.
You need to find the optimum build-up and taper which will allow you to excel in the actual race.

I had a similar situation in regard to temperature. Crummy run on a relatively warm day. Can happen.

As the just tired legs. Are you recovering properly? Getting rest, getting a propper diet? Getting
the right replacement food after long runs?

I'm thinking you aren't fully recovered from your 20 yet. When I ran the day after a 20 miler I'd
run very slowly the next day. My legs felt like [censored] but I was going very slowly.

Once you've got fitness you've got it. It won't evaporate unless you stop completely.

Relax and get in a few easy runs and keep them under 8 miles.

Just remember to be flexable the important part of the program is the long runs. If you must reduce
the total weekly mileage then do it to ensure you're recovered from the long runs.
