Prolapes-Hernated Disc recovery

Hi All,

I'm looking for some net.wisdom here.

Not too long ago I had a herniated and sequented disc S5/L1.
Basically the disc prolapsed and then broke-off/fell-down, and killed
the nerve.

As well as the normal levels of intense pain etc. What also happened
was that the right leg went numb and my right foot was numb, along
with a loss of strength in the right calf. (I am not able to push off
and raise my body weight with right calf).

After MRI's etc. the surgeon decided not to operate, given that the
pain had reduced and that he said I had effectively "already done the
operation to myself". He said that over 3-14 weeks power should
eventually return to my calf and over 3-14 months, sensation should
return to the leg.

Here's my question... does this mean marathons are out for me
permanently now? Has anyone else had any experience in this area?
Running is what keeps me sane, and after having knee surgery last
year, I was *finally* able to run without pain.

Any thoughts?

Hmm. I think that's an oxymoron.

Fell off?? What kind of witch doctor are you seeing. Bits of disc do not
"fall off".

He may be a witch doctor but at least he has the sense to see that surgery
doesn't hold the answers when it comes to back pain. I think YOU are the
only person who can determine the limits of what you can and can't do
following this episode. You'll find many examples of folk who were told that
they would never run again (but subsequently went on to run just fine) on
the net.

Try it and see. Find your own road. No one can find it for you. Good luck.

Aye laddie, Timothy be right on that. I had a fragmented disc several
years ago in "97", and there was a free floating fragment. However
subsequent MRI's showed the piece has disintegrated or worn away since
then. I attribute it to running, the very thing the Dr's said was the
VERY WORSE THING YOU CAN DO WITH A BAD BACK LIKE MINE. It eventually
wore the piece away.
