The PD R540 are SPD-SL types - the same as the DuraAce and Ultegra pedals. Here is the product page for this pedal: http://bike.shimano.com/catalog/cycle/products/component.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441763021&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302033075&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181202&bmUID=1141528191947 It's unfortunate that Shimano did not think out their model #'s a little better, as there is a PD M540 pedal which is an SPD type. Arrrgh! And, of course, you must have the corresponding cleat type. No mixing and matching here - no way.
