Hello all!
I want to buy a rear wheel + 9-speed cassette to use as a dedicated wheel for my trainer.
I have a 9 speed 105 level bike with ....
CASSETTE Shimano HG50, 12-25t
CHAIN Shimano HG73, 9-speed
Question is - what cassette is compatible with my bike/chain? Any 9-speed cassette? Or do I need to purchase the HG50 cassette (Tiagra line)?
What is the criteria that one uses to purchase a cassette? Like - does it depend on chain being used PLUS 9/10 speed?

You should be able to use any 9 speed cassette; not necessarily the HG50. Plenty of other non Shimano manufacturers out there as well (eg SRAM, BBB etc) with 9 speed compatible cassettes.

Yeahhhh ... I sort of figured. My cassette is Tiagra line ... and seems almost impossible to find used ones on ebay. I can get the 105 9-speed cassette real cheap.
Now - does the bicycle chain have any compatibility issues with the cassette? Only asking b/c when on Nashbar.com - it said the 105 line 9-speed cassette should be used with a "Narrow 9-speed chain". Okkkk ... and it listed recommended chains: HG72, HG92, HG7700. And of course my chain (HG73) isn't included.

You probably won't have any compatability issues if you use your HG73 unless it is worn badly. It wouldn't hurt to try it and if it doesn't work, get one off the list. Actually why don't you just pop your cassette off of your road wheel and pop it onto your trainer wheel when you use it?
