Dear Sir or Madam:
I am a college student at the University of Northern Iowa, and I am very interested in the 5K. I am
conducting a research paper on this topic, and it will also be useful for future training runs. I
would appreciate it if you could provide your insights regarding the following research questions.
Your responses to these questions will not be identified and your identity will remain anonymous in
the research. Also, if you wish to receive a copy of this research report, please indicate so in the
last question, and I will provide you with one when I get done with the paper. If you have any
questions about the paper, feel free to contact my advisor Dr. Sarina Chen at [email hidden].
Thank you.

I am hoping you can give me some useful advice about training to run a competitive 5K. I am
interested in walking onto the cross country team in the fall. I am in the process of working my
mileage up to 55 miles per week (I am currently at 35 miles/wk), and I have tried to incorporate
hills, weights, and biking. I know speed work on the track is good for the track season, but how
effective would it be in preparing for running on the grass? What benefits in training would a hear
monitor provide? Are there any dietary plans I need to be following? I need to cut almost a minute
of my 5K, and I wanted to know the most successful training plans to do so. Running is my passion
and I am prepared to put the time in if it will help lower my times. I do a long run each Sunday, so
I have endurance. However, I need speed! Please send your responses to my email address

Thank you so much for your responses.
