Lots of up and down.. though Black Hill has paths now through its
dense heather.

5-6 hours would be my guess....

Better to start at Flotterstone if you can get a McEwans Bus (Route
100 IIRC) rather than say a Lothian 15 to Penicuik.. Better still
start at Balerno and finish in the pub. That way you get Carnethy
thrown in as well.

I'd reckon on about 4 hours. Depends whether or not you want to "summit"
Scald Law before descending to the glen and how direct you fancy tackling
Black Hill. Note that there are a number of paths down off Black Hill
towards Balerno via the East end of Threipmuir Reservoir.

Got on the bus at Princess Street, #37A (Tuesday afternoon), and it
took forever to get to Penicuik. Got to the start of the path to
Balerno (Scald Law) on the A702 via Cuiken Avenue, Glaskill Terrace,
followed a stream, then by Coates farm.

The weather was dry but the wind was very, very strong. The ascent of
Scald Law was made difficult by the wind trying to blow me back down.
Suffered from a very tight right calf close to the trig point so
decided not to try to get to Balerno. Although later I realised my
way back to Penicuik via Carnethy Hill & Turnhouse Hill was nearly as
far!!!

Really good walk with excellent views - number of other walks on the
hills - zero!
