RAGT update

A vicious attempt at ruining RAGT's pursuit of the Tour leadership failed.
Although Sylvain Calzati (50th), Ludovic Martin (90th and day 2 of
naughtiness) and Peirre Bourquenoud (107th) disobeyed director's orders
and brought the team in 19th, ahead of Domina Vacanze and Fass Bortolo,
their wayward effort were for naught and the team leads their nearest
rivals (Domino Vacanze) by more than 1hr11min. RAGT's dominance, albiet
with the abovementioned cheekiness, overshadowed the hard work put in by
Jimmy Casper who brilliantly outbraked Sebastien Joly to seize the Red
Lantern! RAGT will have to decide tonight whether to test the team's
depth and try for the Lantern as well as the team trophy. Frederic Finot
is a time trial specialist and lies a daunting yet manageable 13.5 minutes
of the lead.

Hey, I'll take it. Ludovic Martin has brought some dignity to the team, and
it's about damn time. Yes, he finished 27 minutes behind, but for most of the
stage, he diced it in with the leaders. The effort is what matters, and for the
past two days, he has put in the only visible effort of anyone in the RAGT team.

Let's all chip in and create a fund so that they can get some decent drugs, and
maybe we'll see some more red and green in the mountains next year.

I'm going to my local bike shop and buying a Maillot Jaune this afternoon.
Then I'm posting to Ken to find out the total prize money to RAGT after
Sunday. Then, I'm silkscreening their logo on the front. Back will be
decorated with:

"Last in Tour de France 2004"
"Total prizes $$$$$"
And the team members' names

Not permanent (Deo gratia)

Another day in the saddle. On days like these, fans everywhere, the race
seemingly over, anything can and generally does in the Tour. Names like
Guillaume Auger (40), Gilles Bouvard (50), Christophe Laurent (64)
dutifully pull drinks from the team car and drift backwards to service
their patron Frederic Finot, possibly the finest tactician to grace the
Tour this year. His greatness is attested when fans see that even the tour
refused to rank him! First in pain, yet gracious enough to allow rivals
Sebastien Joly and Jimmy Casper to share the spotlight for a few mild days
in the rolling hills with beatific names like Madeleine, possibly named by
the great Marcel Proust himself. So, as the great parade comes to Lons le
Saulnier, Finot the brave watches his rivals and carefully glides in at
135, protected from harm by his loyal servants Martin and Calzati (132 &
133). Carefully keeping the beaten peloton ahead and in his sights he can
now wonder whether the Team Championship is a lock. Who can say, in these
times of miracles, is 1hr.11mins ever enough? But, surely he dreams that
now might be the time to steal individual glory, to dash within inches of
the rules, cut brazenly ahead of the broom wagon and steel the 14 and a
half meager minutes standing between him and the Lanterne Rouge. Many a
bold cyclist has spoken of the skill, finesse of braking on turns only to
accellerate away in the race against the clock. But who can show the
stamina, the incredible forearm strength to grip those calipers on the
straights, to hold their time on the road when others, like weary marathon
dancers, have already quit? So, tomorrow, Messers Joly and Casper, en
garde. Finot goes time trialing!

"beatific" - saintly, you're on the right track
"Madeleine" - in English, (Marie) Magdalen, sainted, indeed
"Proust" - agnostic, eater of small cakes that predate him, not likely
saintly, as I recall
"mont de la Madeleine" - in a chain of mountains in the Massif central, MUCH
predating the author
"madeleine" - the small cakes (supra), 2 300 000 (depending on the baker) of
which piled one on another would equal the famous climb

Bonne route,

Well, that certainly puts my reckoning that it takes
only 5 Krispy Kreme doughnuts to ride up Alpe d'Huez to shame!
(cf "Alpe d'Huez: Wattage Output" thread)

Ben
I only read Proust for the naughty bits

N.B. A long time ago (Longtemps ...) the New York Times columnist
Russell Baker wrote a very funny column in which he described
an attempt to read Proust as if it were an expedition to Everest,
Sherpas and all. So perhaps there is something to the link
of madelaines and la Madeleine.
