Just a quick note to say I'm back from the Raid Pyreneen. I'll prepare a full report later. I failed to complete the ride, bailing after 37 miles oon the first day. The temperature out on the road was 52 degrees celcius, and with 115 miles to complete that day I just knew I would be unable to keep up a reasonable pace to complete the day at a reasonable hour. The randoneurs who were at this point over an hour ahead of us completed at 10pm in the dark ! It was still 37.5 degress celcius at 7pm, thankfully by that time there was some shade.
The heat lasted pretty much all week and the pace needed was just not doable by me in these conditions so in order to allow the three remaining riders to use the support I elected to ride only part the way each day, apart from the last one. I summited the Cols d'Aubisque, Soulor, Aspin, Peyresoourde and did complete 230 miles on the Raid, about half, and an addtional 100 miles in the mountains before had.

Those Cols aren't much fun in the heat. I did the Raid last year West to East, and starting in the cooler West you can get yourself acclimatised to the heat a little. -- remove remove to reply
I certainly enjoyed the riding that I did. I don't know how close I was to heat exhaustion or sun stroke and didn't believe I would complete the day. I considered it the sensible most considered option at that point.
