If anyone wants to make a run of 17-4PH spokes, I'll be happy to give
them a go! I'd even put them on a steel-shelled coaster brake hub to
present a more honorable challenge.
Considering that regular old 300-series stainless spokes don't give me
any trouble even in 15-16ga, I doubt there would be much to gain in
using a material with higher tensile properties. I doubt that
significantly thinner spokes would be a practical option even if a
much stronger steel were used. Hmmm, perhaps maraging steel
spokes....
