I had the same problem last spring. I found that if I got up, turned on
a light, sat down in my recliner, and picked up a good book or magazine,
that the symptoms slowly subsided over 15-30 minutes. Of course, this
was after the first time scared the ... out of me :).

This went on once or twice a week for a few weeks and then stopped as
suddenly as it started. I haven't had one since. What triggered them?
I have no idea. Since they were going strong when I woke up, I'd tend to
blame a bad dream but I don't remember any. I just wrote it off as a
fluke.

The main thing is not to actually panic. Sit down, take deep breaths,
and assure yourself it'll go away.

BTW, my doctor said unless they become a permanent frequent occurence,
they do no physical harm to the heart.
