I always thought 'audacious' was the adjective? Are you sure Audax isn't
part of a compound noun? As in "Audax ride" or "Audax bike".

Most riders say they are "off to ride an/the audax this weekend"
though not "off to ride a brevet this weekend"

In both those examples you are using Audax adjectivally, ie to qualify
the noun.
