What do people consider a realistic, "good" average walking speed?

    It depends!

If I'm doing a big day in the hills when I know time is short I'll
walk a lot quicker - for instance, we recently did a 21 mile/7500 feet
of ascent walk in a little over 12 hours, so just under 2mph. But if
we're doing something shorter/flatter,. there's more time available to
enjoy the views, have a long lunch/2nd lunch/3rd lunch break, etc. So
another recent walk, we did 11 miles/1500 feet ascent in about 8
    hours, less than 1.5mph

It also depends on how I'm with - the more people the slower the pace,
15 or so of us managed 5 miles in around 7 hours earlier in the year,
though for large groups I generally allow 2kph including stops.

I guess the rule of thu, mbis that I'll take as much time to do the
    walk as is available :-)
