The actual workshop cost $595 (for half day Sunday through half day
Friday) which was an excellent value in my opinion.
The whole trip ended up costing me more than I was planning on, but that
was 'cause of an administrative screw up. On the website, it says that you
can stay in the dorms and have meals on campus for an additional $100.
When I called to sign up, I told the coordinator that was what I wanted to
do and she seemed fine w/ that. Then, as I started to get my paperwork,
etc, it seemed like staying in the dorms was crossed out as an option for
adults. There wasn't good communication on that point and I finally called
the coordinator and she said that staying in the dorms wasn't an option
for adults so I'd need to get a motel. She said they had limited numbers
of rooms because of the Empire Game* and that the only adults staying in
the dorms were mothers who were staying in the rooms w/ their kids. Since
that also meant I'd need to rent a car to get to and from the motel (plus
meals), that more than doubled my expenses for the workshop.
The really frustrating thing was that when I got to the workshop it turned
out that the mothers were staying on seperate floor from the kids, there
were tons of rooms and another woman who'd been told she couldn't stay in
the dorms spoke to Terry about it and he said there was no problem for her
to stay in the dorm so she cancelled her motel and stayed at the dorm for
the rest of the time. I probably could have done that as well, but since
I'd already spread out in my room, I couldn't conveniently return the
rental car and the meals on campus weren't all that great, I decided to go
w/ what I had previously arranged.
So, if you're going to one of these workshops and on campus housing is
listed as an option, you might want to press a little if that's something
you'd want to do.
Still, since I'm counting the whole thing as my summer vacation, it wasn't
all that expensive for a week away and New Paltz is a fun little town.

*I thought this was a polite fiction (because the hotels had lots of
rooms), but I thought maybe it was concern about liability having
unrelated adults stay w/ the kids - but, since the adults were staying on
a different floor it really shouldn't have been an issue anyway.
