Fort Collins is hardly obscure, being named in honor of the
hero of the Battle of Mud Springs in the Plains Indian Wars,
Lt. Col. William O. Collins.
Fort Collins remains Colorado's first line of defence
against the menace of Wyoming, a nefarious state state to
the north whose stronghold, Casper, is a mis-spelling of the
original Fort Caspar, named in honor of the son of William
O. Collins, who was killed there during in the Indian Wars.
In contrast, Pueblo is named to honor the Spanish word for
village or city
(Deutschendorf, Colorado's capital city, was renamed to
honor the late country singer, John Denver. You may, of
course, be forgiven, since you reside in a city named to
honor Whitney Houston.)
Along more literary lines, Twain set his early hymn to
childhood "Tom Sawyer" not Florida, Missouri, where he was
born, nor in Hannibal, where he grew up, but in the mythical
St. Petersburg (think about where the burg of St. Peter is).
In his later, darker years, Twain moved his
mysterious-stranger scenes to Eseldorf, which may be
translated as Jackassville.
