So taking my GPS12 as an example, that stops working when the voltage
falls to around 4.5v. If four 1.5v cells are fitted there is 6v available
when fresh and it will work until they reach about 1.1v per cell. However
with rechargeables there is only 4.8v (4 x 1.2) available to start with.

I see it is possible to buy nicads that are 2/3 the length of standard
cells in some sizes, if it were possible in AA diameter would it be
worth puting 6 in the 12xl, which is supposed to accept voltages from
    5-40V?

Interesting. I'm not sure that the 5 - 40v spec applies to the battery
compartment but if you fancy an experiment and don't mind toasting your GPS
I'd be interested in the results ;-)
