Gnarled diminutive Khun Mom who owns the rice fields directly behind
our house has a big smile on his face, striding around the perimeter
levees of his 'thung naa' in an old pair of old rubber boots cut off
at the shins, he's looking forward to a bumper harvest, but he's
getting concerned that too much more rain will spoil a considerable
amount of the rice, such is the uncertain life of an Isaani rice
farmer. The people, many of them from Khoraat and Bangkok, who have
invested in rice harvesting machines are concerned as well, as at this
rate hand harvesting will required, as the soil may be still be too
wet for the infernal machines to operate. The two 'talaad nat'
markets which were held while we were there, were affected by the rain
as well, as the open areas in town where they set up were turned into
quagmires. It was amusing to see in the shops in town that the chut
"Sangkhathaan" the orange buckets full of goodies which people buy to
take to the temple as an offering to the monks, now almost all have an
