A mate has a Nova which is OK for £200, has enough gears even for fairly hilly terrain because it has such an upright position. I'd spend £300 though and get something like the Switch Cyclone or the Rapide Equip Meteor (comes with mudguards and a rack, which you'll most likely want). Mudguards are always good except for on hardcore road bikes, and you'll want a rack if you're going to go to work on it to carry your stuff in and a waterproof. Backpacks are a pain.
