Strikes me as being a tad hypocritical, picking their brains for
advice,

I may have read you wrong, but don't you think supporting the LBS by
actually buying from it would allow the free advice to continue ?
Depends how much they are charging extra for the advice. I find a good
idea is to go into any shop, bike or not, armed with a good reason why
you cannot buy it (I need a pink one/Mine has a hexagonal drive will
have to go back and check etc) so you can avoid buying it if too much.
Works well. Most LBS's as opposed to Evans etc are not much more than
on line for a lot of stuff and I would rather support them than end up
with only H****ds/Evans as an LBS which has happened nearby.
