    Thanks in advance.

There is no such thing as spot reducing (unless you have the fat
surgically removed). A caloric deficit will cause you to lose weight
wherever your body naturally stores excess fat. You can strengthen the
muscles that are underneath the stomach fat. However, they won't be
visible until you lose your excess body fat. Burning off more calories
than you consume will cause you to lose weight, but it won't
necessarily be from one area of your body. One of the best ways to burn
    calories is running.

you have to run about 35 miles in a reasonable fast time
to burn 3400 calories = one pound of body weight

IF you only weigh 140 lb or so. If you're heavier you'll lose more
    per mile.

And the time is immaterial - the calorie usage per mile is just about
the same if you run "reasonably fast" or walk it.

What's that statement based on ?
Is there a rule-of-thumb for calorie burn equivalent weight loss ?

After running with my HRM for an hour at the weekend, the calculated
stat was just over 1000 calories burned. Does that equate to 4.7 oz ?
